The controlling or controller manager has been described as logical, unemotional, sensible, detail oriented, accurate, analytical and objective. Controller managers often have very strong assertive personalities. Controlling personalities sometimes believe they are the best in every skill set.
Where a reflective / follower manager will be empathetic to towards other’s weaknesses a controlling personality may make abrupt statements that may alienate people, strive to reject the urge to accept alienation.
Controlling personalities can be loners and sometimes do not include others when making decision’s and when with a team of associates a controlling personality or manager may not really hear what others are saying to gain their interest, you need demonstration by graphic’s, graphs, charts, that are direct, brief and sometimes colorful depending on your project, industry, and department or organizations budget.
A demonstrated effect that compares and shows advantage may reach a controlling manager more effectively than dry rhetoric. You must determine when a controlling manager is intentionally stalling and evading a definitive response as when he asks for unending series of time consuming details which requires drawn out, far-fetched impossibilities, before accepting a proposal or plan, and especially when they offer to pay for the extra time you will use for the research, when in fact they have decided against a favorable response.
A controlling personality is as human as you are and need your input to arrive at a positive solution. Be certain to obtain accurate up to date data to corroborate your stance. Controlling managers got to their positions not by sheer luck, hence show your training, expertise, obtain endorsements from people they will respect because their skill, education, and track record.
Controllers are not forever patient so make your presentation linear, structured and credible. As always when you have satisfied the necessary requirements, give the controlling manager enough latitude to set a definite date for response, request a deadline for call back, and follow through promptly.
